Hi!
Here’s a little bit of background about what else is going on in conjunction with the carnival as well as all the logistical information you’ll need for Saturday.
1. logistics
2. contact information
3. other groups
4. AFF-SFC conference in general
1. LOGISTICS
The carnival will be held in the Broadway Community Inc, which is located inside Broadway Presbyterian Church, on the UWS. The address is 601 W. 114th St. at Broadway. Just in case the door’s closed, there’s a number for BCI posted, so just dial that and we’ll buzz you in. If you have any troubles just call Katy’s cell phone. (408-348-3558) Please arrive at BCI at 4:00 so that we can all have time to set up and check in before participants arrive. The space is in the basement of the church, and is the site of a soup kitchen and shelter most nights. It’s painted in bright colors and sectioned off into about 8 sections, each with a slightly different feel - one with couches and a TV, one with Kitchen supplies, another with some desks and computers - so we will assign groups to appropriate spaces. Please let us know if you need anything special in your space ( i.e. power outlets, TV, desks, couches, etc.)
Please also bring banners, art, T-shirts, etc. that you can use to decorate your space. We want this to have a festive feeling, and need your help to make that a reality. The more creative organization-specific stuff you can bring, the better!
Finally, please be prepared to do your carnival game multiple times (if it is a presentation, or game, etc.). There are about 100 conference participants, and we are expecting around 30 middle school students, so you will need to play each “game” or teach each craft multiple times as people circulate through.
2. CONTACT INFORMATION
FFNYC members will be around all day on Saturday, so feel free to get in touch with any of us. Also, Katy is available at any time if you have any further questions. Please feel free to contact her at
(408)348-3558 or
katymastman@gmail.com.
3. OTHER GROUPS
We are very excited that we have 14 groups confirmed to participate in the carnival. There will be plenty of time for you all to get to meet each other and learn a little bit about organizing around related issues in NYC. If your group’s activity wasn’t listed here, it means we don’t have it; please email with details, so we can be sure you have all the space and facilities you’ll need.
Estacion Libre; Casa Atabex Ache; Movimiento Para Justicia en el Bario - collaborative mural + other games yet to be determined
Bean To Cup - coffee bean/map game about understanding coffee supply chain
RAP - workshop on the connection between sweatshop labor in clothing factories and retail outlets
SCRC at NYU - local foods activity with planting seeds
SEEJ at CU - “kissing booth” involving getting hershey kisses for wearing sweatfree clothes, and Q and A on sweatfree garments
FUREE - anti-gentrification “fishing” game highlighting the loss of local oportunities when gentrification rolls through
Oxfam at NYU - agricultural dumping “quiz show” with rice dumping for wrong answers
David Temple - IWW - 15 minute segments of classes highlighting supply chain economic issues of all sorts
US/LEAP - ILO computer game
Fair Trade Uniforms - pin the tail on the fair trade uniform
CIW / FFNYC - tomato bucket relay race
FFNYC - supply chain craft - decorating strips of paper with information about supply chains, then making them into a chain to mail to BK
Just Food - still thinking
4. CLEAN CLOTHES AND FAIR FOOD CONFERENCE
The carnival is a part of a weekend long conference being sponsored by the Alliance for Fair Food and Sweat Free Communities. There will be panels and workshops Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, focusing on fair labor practices in fields and factories around the world. If you are interested in attending the conference (registration is $50) or just getting more information, check it out at
http://www.sweatfree.org/conference
There will be 3 events on Saturday that are open to the public (so feel free to advertise to your lists!) The first will be a rally supporting the CIW’s efforts to get fair wages and labor practices in the tomato fields in FL. At 4:00 we will be rallying outside Burger King in Times Square (which is at 561 Seventh Avenue, NY NY 10018. It’s at 7th Ave and 41st St, close to the Times Square subway stop off the 1 train) as they are the new tomato purchasing target of the campaign. Folks are welcome to meet us at Columbia to make art and hear a pump-up talk on the CIW and head to midtown together. Email for specific location information if you are interested in meeting at Columbia.
After the rally, folks will return to BCI for the carnival. We would prefer folks hosting booths not go to the rally, but rather come to BCI to set up instead. However, if you would like to attend the rally and host a booth, please contact Katy, so that we can work out an earlier set up time for you. After the rally, the Reverend Billy will be performing a “Sweat Free Revival” upstairs in the sanctuary at Broadway Presbyterian. The show promises to be a blast, and admission is a sliding scale from $5-$15, pay what you can.
See you all on Saturday!!

This just in:
The Burger King on Ave. of the Americas is not a good location for a protest -
kind of inside other stores and underground.
SO:
On Saturday, we’re going to the Burger King in Times Square, which is at 561
Seventh Avenue, NY NY 10018. It’s at 7th Ave and 41st St, close to the Times
Square subway stop off the 1 train. We’re still on for 4 pm protest start with
3:00 art-making at Columbia beforehand.
Great! Please pass this on to everyone you’ve told about the rally so far, and
incorporate it into stuff we circulate about the rally.

Hey Hey NYC–
Well we made it! After 40 hours on the bus and a full weekend of excitement, folks who traveled to Chicago for the CIW’s Truth Tour are back in the big apple.
Groups represented include: Families United for Racial and Economic Equality (FUREE), Make the Road By Walking, IWW Warehouse Workers, Starbux Workers Union, Readnex Poetry Squad, Stonybrook’s Social Justice Alliance, Movement in Motion, Allied Resistance, Regeneracion Childcare Collective, Air America and students from CUNY’s Union Semester program, Sarah Lawrence, Hunter College, Kingsborough Community, New York University and NYU Law.
The weekend’s schedule reflected the shift from preparing for the boycott to celebrating the monumental victory of McDonalds signing the agreement to meet the CIW’s three demands. When we arrived in Chicago, we jumped right into the action by participating in an encuentro and rally. The rally included presentations from Dolores Huerta, people of the faith community and words from the workers of the CIW. The rally concluded with a beautiful theater piece depicting farmworkers’ struggle for dignity and justice in the fields–some of our nycistas even got to be tomatoes!
To end a wonderful day, conference participants broke off into three groups and traveled to three nearby Burger Kings for mini demonstrations, thereby launching the next phase of the CIW’s campaign for fair food. Get out the way, King. Get out the way.
Saturday afternoon, after bus confusion and some logistical savviness, we made it to the House of Blues in downtown Chicago to see hours of thrilling performances by outrageously talented artists and CIW allies. The performance ended with a two minute slide show of some poignant moments of the CIW’s history, quite a trip down memory lane.
Sunday morning bright and early, we said goodbye to our gracious hosts at St. Gertrude’s Church (and their hardwood floors) and got back on the bus. That night our exhausted caravan trekked back into the big apple against torrential downpours but with tummies full of trail mix…
We are collecting photo and video footage from our travels and our weekend in Chicago. So if you have some please be in touch. A documentary is in the works about the McDonalds victory and we are looking to include footage from lots of different people from around the country. We’ll keep everyone posted on media as the campaign moves from the Arches to the King.
For a full report from the CIW, visit their website at http://www.ciw-online.org and don’t forget to check out JJ’s pictures (on the website). There’s some pretty adorable ones of us crazy New Yorkers.
But wait, that’s not all! Fair Food NYC will be throwing a carnival of justice on Saturday April 28th. The carnival will bring back familiar faces that traveled with us to Chicago as well as members of the CIW and the Student Farmworker Alliance and include a rowdy performance by Reverend Billy and his entire choir. Don’t miss out–visit our website http://www.fairfoodnyc.org/category/special/cleanclothes2007/ to find out more info and register for the conference.
